What is smile design?
Smile design is a term in aesthetic dentistry that means an individualized concept of creating a beautiful and healthy smile, in cooperation with the patient and the dental technician. It enables that the patient, before the treatment itself, and with the help of computer simulation and temporarily, individually created models (so-called wax up and mock up) to obtain a real picture of what their future smile will look like and to actively participate in its creation. It implies: teeth whitening, composite or ceramic veneers, white fillings, teeth implants...
With a simple and swift creation and correction of the provisional work, the patient is enables to express his wishes and to harmonize with the new smile even before it is done. The dentist can better access what to do for the patient in finding the ideal solution for the patient's situation. The dental technician in this case obtains a better picture of what is being asked of him.
Teeth whitening
A painless procedure that removes the stains on teeth by removing brown and yellow stains. The aim is to achieve an individual optimum of whiteness that appears natural. The results are individual and vary from person to person, depending on the construction of the teeth and the type of procedure. The teeth are stained due to stains, age, chemical damage, medicine, coffee, tea, cigarettes, genetics, disease.
a) In-office bleaching
Teeth whitening in the office is a procedure that with a visit of approximately one hour, gives a fast, drastic and permanent change in the colour of the teeth.
b) Home bleaching
Bleaching with the aid of individually created splints is a process that can be used independently or in combination with In-office whitening. It gradually gives excellent and long-term aesthetic results.
Composite fillings („white fillings“)
Fillings close smaller defects in the teeth which are caused by cavities or trauma (fracture). In the past the material of choice were often so-called black fillings – amalgams, but today they are aesthetically and medically unacceptable and it is advised to have them replaced. The material we use are highly aesthetic composites. The fillings are created so they faithfully mimic the appearance of a tooth. This means the filling forms each bump and depression as with natural teeth, and the transition from the filling to the tooth must be unnoticeable. Forming bumps is not only insisted on because of aesthetic reasons, but also for functional reasons. If this is not respected, there can be pain in the teeth or in the jaw joints, tooth fracture, food leftovers in the tooth and the occurrence of a new cavity.
Instead of classical fillings, it is possible to also create inlay/onlay. Such supplements are made from ceramics in a laboratory on the basis of prints, and offer even better aesthetics in the sense of the reproduction of the smallest details of the tooth and an exceptional durability. They are cemented in the tooth in one piece.
Composite veneers
Composite veneers are thin pieces of composite material specially designed and affixed to the front of teeth to improve the appearance, colour and shape of the tooth. If you have severely discoloured tooth/teeth, chipped edges, if they are unevenly placed in the dental arch, have holes, dents, or there are spaces between the teeth, one of the possible solutions are composite veneers.
Composite veneers require minimal or no drilling of teeth, they are finished in one visit, they are aesthetically satisfactory and are cheaper than ceramic.
Ceramic veneers
Ceramic veneers are specially formed thin pieces of highly aesthetic ceramic adhesively cemented on the front of the tooth in order to improve the appearance, colour and form of the tooth.
Is this a solution for me?
The creation of veneers saves the tooth because in comparison to classic crowns, only the front side of the tooth is drilled and this is done at a minimum level (no-prep veneers). According to the newest research, the duration of a veneer is 5-15 years. Furthermore, the ceramic veneers completely mimic the natural colour of the tooth, which the composite ones cannot always do. They do not lose their colour as the composite ones, and are much stronger and durable.
Ceramic crowns (coverings)
Ceramic crowns are "caps" placed on the polished tooth to protect it from cracking and to return it to being functional and make a more beautiful smile.
There is a difference between metal-ceramic crowns and crowns of non-metal ceramics (zirconium, e.max etc.). Metal ceramic crowns are stronger and aesthetically acceptable. Non-metal crowns are an aesthetically flawless solution which also avoids potential future occurrences of black or dark edges along the gums.
If you have a tooth that has a large filling, or which has been weakened by cavities and fillings and if the filling itself cannot resolve the situation, metal or non-metal crowns come into consideration, depending on the situation in your mouth and your preferences, requirements and capabilities. If there are more of these teeth, and if some are missing, a metal ceramic or non-metal ceramic bridge and implants can be considered.
A bridge is a structure that is placed over the drilled teeth to make them stronger, strengthened and beautified, and with the primary purpose of replacing one or more teeth. The bridge may be a metal-ceramic or non-metal ceramic. A metal-ceramic bridge is solid and aesthetically acceptable aid that is financially favourable. Non-metal ceramics are aesthetically more beautiful and are created using a special technique; a CAD / CAM computer-driven system with specially adapted apparatus, and are thus more accurate and avoid the factor of human error.
